Douglas Cox Viola Opus 879 ~ 16” as Late Guarneri

The viola bears the label “Douglas C. Cox, Brattleboro, Vermont, 2015, #879” and is branded and initialed on the inside. It is built on an original model of well-aged New England grown wood and is styled after the work of Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù. The back is cut on the quarter from two pieces of maple with handsome medium flames descending from the bass side. The neck and scroll are of maple similar to that of the back. The ribs are of maple of less flame than that of the back. The table is of two pieces of spruce of medium to wide growth. The varnish is a red brown color over a golden ground and is shaded and imitated. The fittings are of boxwood with ebony trim.

An original 16" model, developed in 1996. This model takes its proportions from the 15-58" original viola form developed in 1988.
